Recommended citation for this dataset: Krüger, Jan Christoph; Uncertainty quantification of spruce wood: Compression test and images of material orientation; 2026; https://doi.org/10.15480/882.17010 DATA & FILE OVERVIEW The data collected in the zip archive CutImagesRadial contains scans from spruce wood planks of 5mm thickness. The plank is cut from a trunk in radial direction, i.e. the annual rings are perpendicular to the cut plane. This data is used to measure uncertainties of the fiber orientation. The scans are generated using a standard desktop scanner CanoScan LiDE 220. The data collected in the zip archive CutImagesTangential contains scans from spruce wood planks of 5mm thickness. The plank is cut from a trunk in tangential direction, i.e. the annual rings are in the the cut plane. This data is used to measure uncertainties of the radial and tangential material orientations. The scans are generated using a standard desktop scanner CanoScan LiDE 220. The data collected in the zip archive CompressionTests contains compression tests of spruce wood samples. The samples are oriented in fiber direction and have the dimensions (l*w*t) 50mm * 10mm * 5mm. The compression tests are done using the testing machine Zwick/Roell Z01 using the internal distance sensor and the external force sensor Zwick/Roell Xforce FP. To extract the stiffness/displacements of the machine, the file CompressionTests0001_Empty.csv contains the data of a compression test where the stamp of the machine directly presses on the base (without specimen inbetween). The remaining files are named by CompressionTest0001_XXYYZ.csv, where XX represents the x-coordinate, where the sample is cut from the plank, YY represents the y-coordinate and Z the plank number. E.g. CompressionTest0001_0204A.csv means that the specimen was cut from the plank A at the coordinate (2,4). For more details, refer to https://doi.org/10.15480/882.17010 The data collected in the zip archive designExperiments contains the results of the experiments of the optimized designs of the three-point bending beams from https://doi.org/10.15480/882.17010. The compression tests are done using the testing machine Zwick/Roell Z01 using the internal distance sensor and the external force sensor Zwick/Roell Xforce FP. The files are named by mbbTests0001_TI, where T is either D for the deterministically optimized design of R for the robust optimized design. The index I represents the specimen number. For example mbbTests0001_R3 represents the data from the third specimen of the robust optimized design. Finally, the corresponding optimized designs are stored in the zip archive designs. The specimen have been manufactured by directly using these files for the laser cutting machine Trotec Speedy 500. This folder also contains the design documents of clamps/supports for the compression tests and the experiments of the optimized designs.
