Project Abstract
In the scope of project area C, the structure of photonic crystals and photonic glasses plays an important role in tailoring the optical and mechanical properties of coatings. The control of the ordered and disordered deposition is, for example, important for the fabrication of photonic glasses for structural coloration in collaboration with sub-project C2. These photonic glasses consist of yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) nanoparticles (5 – 10 nm) which are arranged in a disordered hollow sphere structure with pores sizes be-tween 100 – 300 nm.

Past studies of C4 show that many methods, for example, drop-casting, vertical self-assembly and slide-coating, are available for the successful fabrication of photonic crystals and photonic glasses of monodisperse spheres. However, the mechanism of the ordered or disordered deposition is not fully understood yet.

To gain greater insight into the deposition mechanism of micro and nanospheres, the structural order of a model system is investigated by C4. The specific objective is to identify experimentally the key parameters, which control ordering of YSZ and PS micro- and nanospheres and to apply this knowledge for the development of ceramic opaline layers and structural colors. For this purpose, relevant system parameters that influence and determine the order of the spheres are experimentally modified.
