Primary goals of the project NAKULEK (Natural Circulation Cooling for Power Electronics) are the realization of a stable two-phase natural circulation cooling system for power electronics in commercial aircrafts and the integration of a latent heat storage in such a system. Due to an increasing number and power density of electrical components the dissipated heat of the power electronics increases. As a result, conventional air cooling is no longer sufficient.
Active liquid cooling systems with pumps can lead to an increased system weight. One way to reduce weight is to use a thermosyphon, where the driving forces of natural circulation are based on density gradients, so no pump is required. This technology is supplemented by a latent heat storage (Phase Change Material) in the area of the evaporator to ensure operation at dynamic processes. Furthermore, the influence of a boiling crisis and various refrigerants are tested in this project.
