    Comparison and Optimization of Automated Yard Crane Systems at Container Terminals
    (Springer, 2020-09-15) ;
    In this chapter, four different automated Rail-Mounted Gantry (RMG) yard crane systems – Single RMG, Twin RMG, Double RMG (DRMG) and Triple RMG (TRMG) – are compared with respect to their characteristics and performance. Furthermore, different approaches for their scheduling are presented: On the one hand, a branch-and-bound procedure for single yard block optimization which incorporates important aspects like crane interference, and on the other hand, an integrated scheduling approach which optimizes the equipment at terminal yard and waterside simultaneously, taking the interrelations with horizontal transport and quay cranes into account. Moreover, a combination of the two approaches is studied. Using a specifically designed simulation model, both the crane systems and the different scheduling approaches are extensively examined with respect to their performance and practical use, e.g. in case of disturbances. Standard priority rules (e.g. First-IN-First-OUT) serve as a benchmark here. It turns out that both approaches are advantageous compared to simple priority rules, and that the crane systems with overtaking possibility are well-adaptable, optimizable, flexible and productive. Moreover, it can be concluded that optimization aspects should already be taken into account in the terminal planning phase, in order to reach optimal productivity levels later on.

    Optimierung von automatischen Lagerkransystemen auf Containerterminals
    (Springer, 2017) ;
    Ulf Speer entwickelt zwei Optimierungsverfahren fur die Reihenfolgeplanung von verschiedenen automatischen Lagerkransystemen und vergleicht sie quantitativ anhand eines Simulationsmodells. Dabei zeigt sich insbesondere beim integrierten Ansatz ein riesiges Potential, eine gute Robustheit gegen betriebliche Störungen und eine hohe Praxisrelevanz der Ergebnisse. Schwerpunkte der Arbeit bilden die Darstellung der Planungsprobleme an Containerterminals sowie die Untersuchung und Kombination verschiedener Optimierungsverfahren und Detaillierungsgrade. Anhand einer Simulation mit praxisnahen Daten und Annahmen vergleicht der Autor Kransysteme und Optimierungsverfahren. Scheduling of different automated yard crane systems at container terminals
    (INFORMS, 2016-09-26) ;
    In this work, different variants of a branch-and-bound procedure for yard crane scheduling at seaport container terminals and their effect on the terminal's performance are studied. In particular, this work investigates the level of detail needed to take the exact crane characteristics, e.g., movements and crane interference, into account in the scheduling algorithm. This is examined for four different automated yard crane systems with one or more cranes that operate on rectangular yard blocks with transfer positions at both ends of the block and with the yard blocks arranged orthogonally to the quay. Using a simulation model with realistic scenario data and an automated guided vehicles system for horizontal transport, the results are compared with respect to different key performance indicators, e.g., yard crane productivity and average lateness of jobs. It turns out that especially the consideration of crane interference leads to significant improvements in yard crane productivity. As a result of the long computation times for some crane systems that render the practical application of the algorithm difficult, an approximation procedure is also developed that generates good results in reasonable time and hence allows for real-time application at a container terminal.
