This paper investigates eight centres in the environs of the urban region of Hamburg as urban spatial structures in which reurbanisation can occur, in contrast to the more rural surroundings. Based on small-scale population and migration data drawn from the official statistics, processes of change affecting the population structure are empirically investigated using three measuring concepts commonly applied in reurbanisation research. The aim is to improve understanding of the processes at work and thus to facilitate the relevant planning processes in the centres concerned. It is possible to demonstrate the existence of reurbanisation - understood as middle-order centres gaining population from their own environs and as a process of population concentration - and it can be seen that changes in all age groups (not only among job starters) play a role in the reurbanisation.
