Despite efforts by politics and society to create a circular economy, the transition is taking place slowly. A central prerequisite for keeping products and the raw materials they contain in the cycle is the inter-organizational exchange of product information, e.g. regarding the product composition. In the absence of such information, landfilling or incineration of products after use are often the only options. In this context, digital twins as a digital representation of a product allow not only the provision of required information, but also updating it over the course of the product’s
life. Based on a research project of the Hamburg University of Technology (TUHH) and the Kühne Logistics University (KLU), this article shows which role digital twins can play on the way to improved information exchange and thus a circular economy.
