This thesis investigates whether composites can be designed to be flame-retardant and eco-friendly whilst maintaining compatible thermo-mechanical properties. The first chapter demonstrates that partial modification with flame retardants conserves resources and preserves mechanical properties. The second chapter focuses on the development of eco-friendly epoxy resins to reduce environmental and health impacts. This involves the targeted use of thermokinetic methods to determine suitable material compositions and curing processes, as well as the development of validation procedures. The third chapter examines the use of bio-based flame retardants. Amino acid-cured epoxy resins demonstrate remarkable flame-retardant properties.
