The transport of goods is necessary because in today's production networks and ways of life, the sites of goods production, and consumption are rarely identical. Hence freight transport serves the purpose of overcoming space. The development of driverless transport systems initially took place in companies and for special tasks. Unmanned vehicles were already used by selected traffic systems. Recently, research has intensified and now includes driving robots which are able to move without a driver, not only in closed environments, such as factories, but in all transport systems. While safety and comfort are essential aspects in the field of individual mobility, economic aspects such as lack of drivers, cost aspects, or reliability may play an important role in the future of autonomous goods transport.
