In the future, automated driving at SAE Level 4 will enable drivers to perform non-driving related activities (NDRA), as they will be able to turn their backs on traffic. In the future, the driver's cabin could be used as a "mobile office," for example. In addition to efficiency and cost benefits, this could also increase the attractiveness of the occupation of a professional driver. Findings from exploratory interviews with various stakeholders (HMI, road safety, OEM, logistics service providers and professional drivers) provide initial assessments of the potential benefits from exercising NDRA during automated driving at SAE Level 4 in heavy freight vehicles. From today's perspective, the benefits are seen primarily in a legalization of mostly private NDRA already performed today. The potential for shifting simple dispositive activities is shrinking due to increasing digitization in logistics.
