Concepts of modularity are primarily used to solve the goal conflict between increased product variety and the aspiration for standardization. The implementation of an optimal product strategy as well as the realization and/or extension of modularity concepts require cost evaluation according to the costs-by-cause principle for decision support. The present paper discusses a framework of a decision support system for implementing concepts of modularity regarding their monetary effects. For that purpose, appropriate key indicators are utilized to present a structured procedure for the identification and evaluation of modularity-induced cost effects. © Carl Hanser Verlag.
