The present work deals with the optimization of a novel wet centrifugal fluidized bed classifier for separations in the micron range. Experiments and CFD calculations were applied to investigate the influence of the Coriolis force on the fluid flow and the fluidized bed. Further experiments were conducted to study and to model the expansion behavior of the centrifugal fluidized bed. Based on the findings a novel discharge mechanism for the coarse fraction has been developed. The measured pressure drop characteristic of the coarse particle bed reveals the range of fluidizing velocities which are optimal for the performance of classification. With the optimized classifier sharp classifications with a strong reduction of the misclassification of fines were achieved in different experiments with quartz, limestone and glass beads.
