In the years following the founding of the universities of applied sciences, the focus of their activities was primarily on teaching. However, other perspectives for this new type of higher education institution were seen at an early stage, and the interest of university teachers also gradually turned more towards the field of research. In their conclusion, the authors state that Fachhochschulen as universities of applied sciences have found their place in the higher education system. In the context of the differentiation of the universities' tasks, the universities of applied sciences can gain and establish their unique selling point through a very specific application-oriented research profile. In one respect, however, it certainly lends itself to becoming more similar to the universities: As universities of applied sciences, the universities of applied sciences can also make greater efforts in their application-oriented research projects to operate and prove themselves not only in the national, but also in the international context.
