Mobility is a major challenge for visually impaired people. They need a tool to help them find their way. Whereas for large-scale-movements contact based navigation is well established, navigation in a setting with many people or very crowded rooms or on public stairways poses still a challenge. The proposed project implements a stick with ultrasonic sensors and vibration motors that helps people with visual impairments navigate in these special surroundings. The device uses advanced ultrasound technology to detect obstacles and stairs nearby and reflect this through tactile signals.
