Debates about the status of occupations and professionalism have been going on for a long time, but are being intensified by the influences of digitalisation, automation and artificial intelligence. The article evaluates these debates, transfers identifiable characteristics into a reference system for a new professionalism and uses this “instrument” to examine empirically found skilled work and qualifications at the shopfloor. It is worked out that a model for professionalism must itself include influences of deprofessionalisation. Then, professionalism and work organised in professions will not prove to be a myth, but a structure that continues to support individuals, gainful employment and society.
