In the present work the feasibility of engineering an enzymatic in vitro production process for 1,3-propanediol (1,3-PDO) from glycerol was demonstrated. In this novel bioprocess, a very high production yield of about 0.95 mol 1,3-PDO/mol glycerol was reached. The bottleneck of the process regarding costs and productivity is considered to be mainly related to the inactivation of glycerol dehydratase through its mechanism-based suicide-effect.
