The schedule reliability of an industrial production facility is determined by the output lateness of the orders that are being processed. The control variables connected with output lateness have been found to be sequence deviations and backlog. The flaws of production systems with suboptimal schedule reliability can be identified through analyzing the status of those control variables. Based on the analysis results, systematic improvement measures can be applied. Unanswered is the question, how each control variable theoretically contributes to losses in schedule reliability in quantitative terms. This article presents the mathematical modeling of the overall output lateness, derived from the partial output lateness resulting from backlog and the partial output lateness resulting from sequence deviations. The actuating variables will be clearly separated in their effect on schedule reliability. This will advance the accuracy of improvement activities.
