Tuned mass dampers are a wellestablished method for reducing chatter vibrations in turning operations with long cantilevered boring bars. The tendency to chatter increases with increasing length and decreasing tool diameter. This paper presents a novel tuned mass dampers for boring bars with diameters down to 10 mm. Its design is based on numerical modelling. Machining tests carried out show the significantly improved process stability.
