A method to efficiently describe arbitrarily shaped dielectric lens antennas based on spherical harmonics is proposed. It requires a low number of expansion coefficients, thereby enabling a fast optimization. The approach is particularly useful for electrically small lenses. An exemplary lens design with a flat gain profile is obtained and validated through measurements.
