Fatty alcohols are important chemical intermediates and are mainly applied as emulsifiers, surfactants and lubricants. Therefore, an efficient and sustainable synthesis is necessary. A chemoenzymatic approach was employed to develop a solvent-free and almost completely atom-economical reaction sequence. Besides the two catalysts, no further substances are necessary in order to combine the esterification of a fatty alcohol with the corresponding fatty acid and the subsequent hydrogenation of the formed wax ester. Based on this idea, two process variants were realized, as well as the development of a catalyst recycling concept.
