Increasing problems with contaminated dredged substances have led to the questions how sediment composition is related to waste water quality and how its evolution can be predicted from water analyses. Evaluation of current literature and own research suggests that there are many factors affecting the distribution of trace metals between solution and particulates in aquatic systems: (i) chemical form of metal inputs both from natural and civilisational sources; (ii) conditions in the aqueous phase (pH, redox, ionic strength, organic complexing substances, biological activity, temperature); (iii) concentration and composition of particulate matter, mainly with respect to surface-active phases and grain size distribution. At present it seems that calculations of equilibrium data (i.e. Kd-factors of solid/solution partition coefficients) are inadequate to reflect natural conditions, because of the complexity of interactive mechanisms and, in particular, due to the lack of data on reactions kinetics of sorption/desorption processes in multi-components systems.
