To date it was difficult to find the sources of heavy metal emitters in wastewater. In this study a possible way for localization of heavy metal contaminated discharges into the sewer is described. The method is based on biological monitoring and the high accumulation of heavy metals on moss (Sphagnum recurvum). In laboratory and field experiments a distinct accumulation of heavy metals on moss was indicated; the uptake of heavy metals is fast so that short-term impacts could be detected. Metal path can be determined by comparison of three samples on a sewer branch. The method allows the fast, easy and unobserved encirclement of dischargers.
