This thesis demonstrates that distributed virtual environments can be
implemented in a secure way using today's technology. Based on the
analysis of the application-specific security requirements, I present the
design and implementation of a secure architectural basis, a high-performance
serialisation and communication library as well as the additional software
components of a security architecture customised to the needs of distributed
virtual environments.
