In the field rubber parts are exposed to the environment and mechanical loads for long periods of time. During this time material properties change due to chemical and physical aging mechanisms. Over time the combination of chemical aging with a static mechanical load leads to a permanent deformation. Experimental results are presented, which show the diverse influence of a static load during thermal aging on the material properties and on the stress state of a specimen. The resulting inhomogeneous stress state of specimens aged with preload can influence the lifetime considerably. © 2013 Taylor & Francis Group.
