Finding a sustainable waste disposal strategy is become an absolute necessity in Karachi. However, MSW generated in the city is openly disposed. This dissertation aims to assess the environmental sustainability and compare GHG mitigation potential of different landfill approaches such as open dumps, sanitary landfills with post-aeration, anaerobic bioreactor landfills and bioreactor landfills with post aeration in the specific climate and MSW composition in Karachi.
Results of this dissertation are based on lab-scale investigations conducted by simulating landfill conditions. Furthermore, on the basis of results of landfill simulation experiments, this dissertation proposed of an environmental sustainable approach for landfill development in Karachi.
