The main focus of the contribution of the Institute for Fluid Dynamics and Ship Theory at Hamburg University of Technology (TUHH) to the joint collaborative research project PrICE was a 3D numerical model for the interaction of ships in level ice. The procedure consists of a viscous (turbulent) flow solver with a bidirectional, monolithic coupling to a contact-dynamics simulation procedure in combination with an ice breaking model. The outcome of the project is the availability of a complex numerical method for the simulation of the mechanical and hydrodynamical interaction between ship, level ice and the resulting ice floes and its application to five complex ice going ships. The ice floes move fully-dynamically within the computational domain and interact with each other as well as with the hull and the level ice. The prediction of the interaction forces around the hull shows a fair agreement with full scale measurements carried out on the research vessel Polarstern. Studies of different simulation parameters for various types of ships show the capabilities as well as possible applications of this method.
