We test our hypotheses on 716 publications in top-tier marketing journals between 2000 and 2005, using two publication databases. Our findings show that highly novel innovations are achieved by teams that have medium levels of brokerage opportunities and that this effect is mediated by the informal hierarchy in the team. Teams with a flat hierarchy perform best with limited brokerage opportunities while teams with a steep hierarchy perform best when an excess of brokerage opportunities is present.
