This thesis presents first experiments on active strain-sensing with a nanoporous-metal hybrid material. The thermodynamic relation between elastic properties, sensing- and actuation parameters that is derived in this work leads to good agreement between experiment and theory. The experiments show that this class of material behaves phenomenologically equally to piezoceramics although the underlying microscopic mechanisms are completely different.
