Small group velocity of light in periodical structures can be utilized to dramatically decrease the size of phase shift, time delay, and dispersion compensation components. In this thesis slow light in photonic crystal line-defect waveguides was investigated. Four major issues were considered: small group velocity effect, large second order dispersion, coupling to small group velocity modes, and disorder induced losses.
