Shear design of existing bridge deck slabs is not satisfactorily resolved. A significant proportion of the actions on bridge decks results from wheel loads. Up to now, there is no generally accepted method available. Thus, the German Federal Highway Research Institute (BASt) initiated a research project with the objective of developing a generalised design procedure for shear in RC bridge decks without shear reinforcement for new structures. Based on research done at TU Hamburg, a novel method is proposed for new structures that allows computer-aided shear design without determining an effective width. The procedure was modified for existing bridges and will be presented in the following.
