Hursthouse's areas of interest/expertise are the environmental geochemistry of metallic elements, persistent organic pollutants; analytical/environmental chemistry; Environmental pollution, resource exploitation and implications for human health; environmental protection and legislation, industrial processes, economic development and society; remediation and treatment of (chemical) pollution; chemical and environmental hazards, waste and environmental management and regulation.
