A new mathematical model for the distribution of side damages with respect to damage location, damage length, and damage penetration is presented. Its correspondence with the results of damage statistics is shown. For the probability that a compartment or wing compartment will be flooded, formulas are set up which are strictly based on the assumed distribution functions. It Is recommended to introduce these formulas in a revised subdivision regulation applicable to all types of sea-going merchant ships.
