The most difficult part is to overcome resource contention of message sender and receiver: under some operating systems, the receiver wants to read the message before the sender has finished wiriting it. Synchronization of these asynchronous tasks can be achieved by meeting two basic preconditions: (1) both computers are able to read, write and share files on a virtual disk or directory, (2) a non-interruptible rename operation is available for both computers to operate on the virtual disk or directory. It is shown how a primitive portable message passing mechanism (called PCA, the Portable Communication Architecture) can be fully implemented in high level languages, virtually without recoursing to any low level operating connected by a network, it is then possible to implement message passing, mailboxes and remote computation mechanisms easily as variations of the PCA.
