Prior research has provided initial insights into stakeholder involvement in regional sustainability transitions, but further scientific evidence on the role of stakeholders during implementation is needed. The aim of this paper is to shed light on the development of regional sustainability using real-life examples. The focus of the analysis is on the involvement and roles of stakeholders as important actors in circular economy innovation processes in regions. The study uses a case study design to investigate two northern German regions. The results provide organisational drivers that can be orchestrated by local authorities. The paper contributes to both scientific literature and practice by adding specific findings for rural regions and for different stakeholder types in innovation processes, and it provides practical guidelines for the key actors involved in regional-level circular economy transitions.en2666-7916Cleaner production letters2026Elsevierhttps://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/4.0/Circular economy implementationRegional developmentRural regionsStakeholder involvementSustainability transitionSocial Sciences::333: Economics of Land and Energy::333.7: Natural Resources, Energy and EnvironmentTechnology::650: Management, Public RelationsInvolving key stakeholders in the circular economy: Insights from a regional sustainability transition project in northern GermanyJournal Articlehttps://doi.org/10.15480/882.1697010.1016/j.clpl.2026.10014210.15480/882.16970
