Based on reference products, the development of new product generations consists of the activities of variation in order to carry over and developing newly by embodiment variation and principle variation. The authors of this contribution use several generations of the dual mass flywheel (DMF) as an example to explain causes and resulting consequences and challenges of different types of variation which were made in the transition from one DMF-generation to another. The presented knowledge is very detailled and precise because the main author was personally involved in the development processes. Furthermore the paper shows effects of different types of variation on C&C²-A-models which are used to model the relation between function and embodiment of the technical system. These phenomena are a first basis to identify variation types when analysing the technical system. Previews on current and upcoming research works in the field of PGE conclude this essay.de1434-0860Forschung im Ingenieurwesen/Engineering Research201711331SpringerTechnikPGE – Produktgenerationsentwicklung am Beispiel des ZweimassenschwungradsPGE – Product Generation Engineering by the example of the dual mass flywheelJournal Article10.1007/s10010-016-0210-0Other
