He studied biology at the University of Technology in Munich, Germany, and received the Ph.D. degree in microbiology from the same university in 1993. From 1993 to 2000 he was research assistant at the University of Technology Munich. He joined the Leibniz Institute DSMZ as curator of Archaea and Extremophiles in August 2000.
