This model takes account of interactions between the building elements, e.g. the pile-to-pile or the pile-to-raft interaction. Additionally, stress and direction depending soil properties are taken into account, e.g. the soil stiffness or the loading history. An evolutionary algorithm is used to optimize an exemplary combined pile-raft foundation. Using this optimization method, the total costs and settlement of the foundation are reduced. A case specific correlation between total costs and settlement is presented. Hence this correlation can be used by the design engineer as a decision support. During the installation process of the foundation, the soil state properties are modified. So the influence on a combined pile-raft foundation design is presented. © 2011 Ernst & Sohn Verlag für Architektur und technische Wissenschaften GmbH & Co.
