In this paper extreme wave groups are generated and investigated experimentally by measurements of particle velocities using LDV (Laser Doppler Velocimetry) and dynamic pressures employing pressure transducers. The focus lies on the domain close to the elevated instantaneous water line where the highest uncertainties of conventional wave theories occur. The wave groups under consideration are realizations of extreme wave scenarios that are synthesized from real world measurements and transferred into the physical wave tank. In each case the target wave group is embedded - thus influenced - by a surrounding irregular seaway. The measurements are compared with results obtained byWAVETUB - a numerical wave tank using potential theory which is applied within a finite element approach.
