The whole process was designed to be environmentally friendly and cost efficient by only using water, enzymes and Carbon Dioxide during consecutive steps. Lipids are extracted during Supercritical CO2 extraction and proteins during the first Liquid-HotWater (LHW) Hydrolysis step. Subsequently sugars are converted from carbohydrates during a more severe hydrolysis (LHW hydrolysis at higher temperatures resp. steam explosion) and enzymatic treatment. Consequently, the lignin has been purified by a consecutive fractionation of lipids, proteins and carbohydrates from CSS.
