We motivate the need for modern industry standards such as those developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission and introduce concepts based on those standards to foster integration in a modern utility environment by using service-oriented architectures and Semantic Web services. The focus lies on COLIN, a methodology applicable to overcome fallacies in the integration of different industry standards.
