Often major technological modifications of the vessel are needed to assure economic and ecologic operations. Such retrofitting projects pose new challenges for the ship sub-system suppliers. Designing modified equipment is hardly possible without information of the as-built status of the ship. Generally ship owners are not capable of providing accurate 3D models without the assistance of service companies. A common approach to generate 3D models is to use laser scanning technology. However the reverse engineering process to derive 3D models from point clouds is time and labour consuming. This paper describes an approach for a more efficient tender preparation process for retrofit scenarios in the shipbuilding industry. The focus is on a new method to record the as-built situation and to generate 3D models automatically by using low-cost technology.
