Such biotransformations are of interest for the preparation of pharmaceuticals and fine chemicals as they catalyze asymmetric aldol reactions with glycine as readily available aldol donor, thus resulting in the formation of α-amino-β-hydroxycarboxylic acids. So far, a major limitation has been the non-favourable diastereoselectivity due to the switch from a kinetic to thermodynamic control of the biocatalytic reaction system.
