Based on modal-superposition theory, there is always a summation of several mode shapes involved. Identifying the dominant shapes, if several mode shapes with similar eigenfrequencies participate, is a non-trivial task. As a solution to this problem, this paper introduces a method to identify an arbitrary set of shapes in a vibration response from either measurement or simulation based on an inverse participation factor calculation. The method is tested based on the vibration response obtained from a multibody simulation of a large-bore combustion engine. A key feature of the method is that it is not bound to mode shapes, but can be used to identify arbitrary shapes in the response. Thereby, it provides an objective metric for mode identification.enTechnology::600: TechnologyParticipation factor based identification of mode shapesConference PaperConference Paper
