Smart campuses aim to improve comfort, health, and productivity of students and staff, while becoming more energy-efficient through the application of new technologies. However, smart campus concepts are not yet standardized or widely adopted, due to the complex interdisciplinary nature of university campuses. The work presented in this paper demonstrates the potential of a smart campus for the Hamburg University of Technology (TUHH), centered on digital twin technology. The “TUHH-Twin” serves as a common data environment to integrate data collected on campus from various sources, such as indoor and outdoor environmental sensors, room occupancy sensors, and electricity meters. In addition, the TUHH-Twin allows students and researchers to visualize and query campus data, which is publicly accessible for research purposes, using building information modeling and Internet of Things technologies. The TUHH-Twin will be further developed through research and student projects, as well as in courses offered at TUHH. The campus data collected during the project may be used to improve the quality of life on campus and have a scientific basis to optimize room occupancy and informed decision making with respect to reduced energy consumption.
