The Institute for Industrialization of Smart Materials (ISM) is engaged in research and development of "smart" materials and their transfer into industrial products. Such materials are used in particular for adaptive, self-regulating system components, which can be realized, among other things, with the help of additive manufacturing (AM). The director of the institute, Professor Kelbassa, is also the director of the Fraunhofer Institute for Additive Manufacturing Technologies IAPT in Hamburg-Bergedorf. Further research focuses include, for example, function and sensor integration with the aid of AM.
