Item type:Publication, Access status: with files , Structured reflection to support design method validation and adaptation in product architecture design – a case study(Cambridge University Press (CUP), 2026-10-26); ; ; ; Design methods should support engineers in efficiently developing technical systems but are often considered difficult to understand and apply. Conventional method validation focuses on performance outcomes, providing little insight into how users experience methods during application or adaptation. Structured reflection has been discussed to uncover misunderstandings and identify improvements, but its systematic application in method development remains underexplored. This article investigates how reflection can support design method adaptation in early validation. A multiple-workshop case study was conducted with 20 participants applying four methods under comparable conditions during the Product Architecture Design Summer School. Reflection was systematically planned, guided and analyzed through coded audios. The dataset includes four planning documents, 20 Canvas documents, 400 minutes of recordings and questionnaire feedback on reflection tools. Results show recurring reflection patterns: reflection is strongly process-oriented; action planning emerges only after descriptive phases ; social aspects are rarely addressed without explicit prompts. While reflection tools were perceived as useful, guiding questions require simplification for intuitive use. A four-stage framework for Reflection-Driven Method adaptation is proposed, supporting researchers in planning, executing and analyzing reflection as a method validation instrument. The study demonstrates how reflection can produce actionable improvements and offers a reproducible approach for early method validation in engineering design.Publicationtype: Journal Article7 15 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Publicationtype: Book Part13 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings

Item type:Publication, Access status: with files , Flexibility evaluation of modules with a focus on interfaces(Cambridge University Press (CUP), 2025-08-27); ; ; In the context of volatile markets, characterised by a need for continuous product development involving module-wise product modifications, the importance of flexibility as an attribute of products and their production system has been increasing. This paper presents a methodological approach focusing on the flexibility evaluation of modules regarding their interfaces. The subject encourages engineers and researchers to analyse and rethink the interface design and the location of module boundaries regarding change propagation. The method was validated using the Design Method Validation System (DMVS) to determine its usefulness, applicability and acceptability. The design workshop for validation was applied to a product family of trunk lids by employees of a German car manufacturer.Publicationtype: Journal Article18 17 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings

Item type:Publication, Access status: without files , Enhancing Collaborative Modular Product Development: Interface Allocation and Associated ResponsibilitiesFor meeting the dynamic demands of customers on a product, development increasingly relies on expertise from a diverse array of disciplines and domains. Only this collaboration makes it possible to provide comprehensive and practical approaches to solutions for various challenges. However, in addition to variety-induced complexity, this adds complexity due to increased collaboration. Particularly in developing modular product families, this circumstance leads to an expanded consideration of collaboration in subsystems, enabling effective product-family-system development. Collaboration in modular product families leads to a necessary integration of the consideration of interfaces' dependencies, responsibilities, and specifications. This paper presents an approach to identify and manage interface responsibilities in multi-disciplinary modular product-family systems using product and organization view matrices. Results from previous studies are put into a processual context to coordinate the collaboration considered. A matrix-based solution on product and allocated organizational elements improves collaboration.Publicationtype: Conference Paper13 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Access status: with files , Incorporating field effects into the design of modular product families(Cambridge University Press (CUP), 2023-07); ; ; ; With advancing digitalization, new technologies with more and more digital components make it necessary to integrate new components into current and future products. Sensors and actuators, such as motors, emit electromagnetic and thermal fields that can greatly affect product performance. Recent work has considered fields at the functional level using functional structures and at the system level using DSM. In this paper, the effects of fields on product architecture are investigated at the component level. Using an appropriate visualization, the impact of fields on the product structure is considered. Architectural guidelines are then used to develop suitable product structures. The methodological approach is then applied to a product family of vacuum cleaner robots. The overlaid field information helps to gain deeper insights into the product architecture. The approach is useful for representing alternative structures. The new mapping of functional and structural relationships by moving module boundaries against fields can help promote architectural innovation.Publicationtype: Conference Paper22 39 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Access status: with files , Methodical support for the new development of cyber-physical product families(Cambridge University Press (CUP), 2022-05); ; ; The new development of cyber-physical product families currently lacks a methodically supported modularisation approach.
