Item type:Publication, Access status: with files , Directional soliton and breather beamsSolitons and breathers are nonlinear modes that exist in a wide range of physical systems. They are fundamental solutions of a number of nonlinear wave evolution equations, including the unidirectional nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLSE). We report the observation of slanted solitons and breathers propagating at an angle with respect to the direction of propagation of the wave field. As the coherence is diagonal, the scale in the crest direction becomes finite; consequently, beam dynamics form. Spatiotemporal measurements of the water surface elevation are obtained by stereo-reconstructing the positions of the floating markers placed on a regular lattice and recorded with two synchronized high-speed cameras. Experimental results, based on the predictions obtained from the (2D + 1) hyperbolic NLSE equation, are in excellent agreement with the theory. Our study proves the existence of such unique and coherent wave packets and has serious implications for practical applications in optical sciences and physical oceanography. Moreover, unstable wave fields in this geometry may explain the formation of directional large-amplitude rogue waves with a finite crest length within a wide range of nonlinear dispersive media, such as Bose-Einstein condensates, solids, plasma, hydrodynamics, and optics.Publicationtype: Journal ArticleScopus© Citations 23 279 262 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Access status: with files , Determining periodic orbits via nonlinear filtering and recurrence spectra in the presence of noiseIn nonlinear dynamical systems the determination of stable and unstable periodic orbits as part of phase space prediction is problematic in particular if perturbed by noise. Fourier spectra of the time series or its autocorrelation function have shown to be of little use if the dynamic process is not strictly wide-sense stationary or if it is nonlinear. To locate unstable periodic orbits of a chaotic attractor in phase space the least stable eigenvalue can be determined by approximating locally the trajectory via linearisation. This approximation can be achieved by employing a Gaussian kernel estimator and minimising the summed up distances of the measured time series i.e. its estimated trajectory (e.g. via Levenberg-Marquardt). Noise poses a significant problem here. The application of the Wiener-Khinchin theorem to the time series in combination with recurrence plots, i.e. the Fourier transform of the recurrence times or rates, has been shown capable of detecting higher order dynamics (period-2 or period-3 orbits), which can fail using classical FouRiER-based methods. However little is known about its parameter sensitivity, e.g. with respect to the time delay, the embedding dimension or perturbations. Here we provide preliminary results on the application of the recurrence time spectrum by analysing the Hénon and the Rössler attractor. Results indicate that the combination of recurrence time spectra with a nonlinearly filtered plot of return times is able to estimate the unstable periodic orbits. Owing to the use of recurrence plot based measures the analysis is more robust against noise than the conventional Fourier transform.Publicationtype: Journal ArticleScopus© Citations 5 204 379 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Access status: with files , Capturing rogue waves by multi-point statistics(IOP Publishing, 2016-01-12); ; ; As an example of a complex system with extreme events, we investigate ocean wave states exhibiting rogue waves. We present a statistical method of data analysis based on multi-point statistics which for the first time allows the grasping of extreme rogue wave events in a highly satisfactory statistical manner. The key to the success of the approach is mapping the complexity of multi-point data onto the statistics of hierarchically ordered height increments for different time scales, for which we can show that a stochastic cascade process with Markov properties is governed by a Fokker-Planck equation. Conditional probabilities as well as the Fokker-Planck equation itself can be estimated directly from the available observational data. With this stochastic description surrogate data sets can in turn be generated, which makes it possible to work out arbitrary statistical features of the complex sea state in general, and extreme rogue wave events in particular. The results also open up new perspectives for forecasting the occurrence probability of extreme rogue wave events, and even for forecasting the occurrence of individual rogue waves based on precursory dynamics.Publicationtype: Journal ArticleScopus© Citations 12 266 301 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Access status: with files , Hydrodynamic supercontinuum(American Physical Society (APS), 2013-08-02); ; ; ; We report the experimental observation of multi-bound-soliton solutions of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLS) in the context of hydrodynamic surface gravity waves. Higher-order N-soliton solutions with N=2, 3 are studied in detail and shown to be associated with self-focusing in the wave group dynamics and the generation of a steep localized carrier wave underneath the group envelope. We also show that for larger input soliton numbers, the wave group experiences irreversible spectral broadening, which we refer to as a hydrodynamic supercontinuum by analogy with optics. This process is shown to be associated with the fission of the initial multisoliton into individual fundamental solitons due to higher-order nonlinear perturbations to the NLS. Numerical simulations using an extended NLS model described by the modified nonlinear Schrödinger equation, show excellent agreement with experiment and highlight the universal role that higher-order nonlinear perturbations to the NLS play in supercontinuum generation. © 2013 American Physical Society.Publicationtype: Journal ArticleScopus© Citations 58 227 97 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Access status: with files , Super roguewaves : observation of a higher-order breather inwaterwaves(American Physical Society (APS), 2012-03-29); ; ; Super rogue waves with an amplitude of up to 5 times the background value are observed in a waterwave tank for the first time. Nonlinear focusing of the local wave amplitude occurs according to the higher-order breather solution of the nonlinear wave equation. The present result shows that rogue waves can also develop from very calm and apparently safe sea states. We expect the result to have a significant impact on studies of extreme ocean waves and to initiate related studies in other disciplines concerned with waves in nonlinear dispersive media, such as optics, plasma physics, and superfluidity.Publicationtype: Journal ArticleScopus© Citations 426 228 173
