The objective is to operate a set of compressor units in an energy-efficient way, while at the same time meeting a varying load demand. The main challenge is the fact that the available models, and in particular the compressor efficiency maps, carry a significant amount of uncertainty. For this task, real-time optimization (RTO) techniques that rely on plant measurements and correct the model are available in the literature. This paper is tailored to the application of RTO to the compressor load-sharing optimization problem. An adaptive optimization approach that guarantees optimal plant operation upon convergence is used. To this end, we use appropriate measurements to estimate plant gradients and correct the model in such a way that it exhibits the same optimality conditions as the plant. This way, the challenge is shifted from having an accurate model to being able to estimate experimental gradients accurately. We show how the specific problem structure can be exploited for the purpose of efficient estimation of plant gradients. We consider both parallel and serial compressor configurations as well as operation close to surge constraints. The simulation of an industrial case study demonstrates the efficiency of the proposed approach.Publicationtype: Journal Article13 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Access status: without files , A note on efficient computation of privileged directions in modifier adaptationIn the presence of plant-model mismatch, the estimation of plant gradients is key to the performance of measurement-based iterative optimization schemes. However, gradient estimation requires time-consuming experiments, wherein the plant is sequentially perturbed in all input directions. To ease this gradient estimation task, it has been proposed to exploit the sensitivity of the model gradient with respect to the model parameters to find a reduced input subspace that is spanned by a few privileged directions for gradient estimation. The computation of gradient sensitivities to parametric variations requires the evaluation of double derivatives with respect to both the inputs and the parameters. In this short note, we propose an approach for computing the privileged directions using only single derivatives with respect to the inputs. We show that this approach results in significant reduction in computational costs without compromising the quality of the privileged directions.Publicationtype: Journal Article15 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Access status: without files , Active directional modifier adaptation for real-time optimizationModifier adaptation is a real-time optimization (RTO) methodology that uses plant gradient estimates to correct model gradients, thereby driving the plant to optimality. However, obtaining accurate gradient estimates requires costly plant experiments at each RTO iteration. In directional modifier adaptation (DMA), the model gradients are corrected only in a small subspace of the input space, thus requiring fewer plant experiments. DMA selects the input subspace offline based on the local sensitivity of the Lagrangian gradient with respect to the uncertain model parameters. Here, we propose an extension, whereby the input subspace is selected at each RTO iteration via global sensitivity analysis, thus making the approach more reactive to changes and robust to large parametric uncertainties. Simulation results performed on the run-to-run optimization of two different semi-batch reactors show that the proposed approach finds a nice balance between experimental cost and optimality.Publicationtype: Journal Article9 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Access status: without files , A feasible-side globally convergent modifier-adaptation schemeIn the context of static real-time optimization (RTO) of uncertain plants, the standard modifier-adaptation scheme consists in adding first-order correction terms to the cost and constraint functions of a model-based optimization problem. If the algorithm converges, the limit is guaranteed to be a KKT point of the plant. This paper presents a general RTO formulation, wherein the cost and constraint functions belong to a certain class of convex upper-bounding functions. It is demonstrated that this RTO formulation enforces feasible-side global convergence to a KKT point of the plant. Based on this result, a novel modifier-adaptation scheme with guaranteed feasible-side global convergence is proposed. In addition to the first-order correction terms, quadratic terms are added in order to convexify and upper bound the cost and constraint functions. The applicability of the approach is demonstrated on a constrained variant of the Williams–Otto reactor for which standard modifier adaptation fails to converge in the presence of plant-model mismatch.Publicationtype: Journal Article13 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Access status: without files , Improved directional derivatives for modifier-adaptation schemesModifier adaptation enables the real-time optimization (RTO) of plant operation in the presence of considerable plant-model mismatch. For this, modifier adaptation requires the estimation of plant gradients, which is experimentally expensive as this might involves several online experiments. Recently, a directional modifier-adaptation approach has been proposed, which uses the process model to compute offline a subset of input directions that are critical for plant optimization. This allows estimating directional derivatives only in the critical directions instead of full gradients, thereby reducing the burden of gradient estimation. However, in certain cases such as change of active constraints and large parametric uncertainties, directional modifier adaptation may lead to significant suboptimality. Here, we propose an extension to directional modifier adaptation, whereby, at each RTO iteration, we compute a set of critical directions that are robust to large parametric perturbations. We draw upon a simulation study of the run-to-run optimization of the Williams-Otto semi-batch reactor to illustrate the performance of the proposed extension.Publicationtype: Conference Paper5 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Access status: without files , Modifier adaptation for real-time optimization : methods and applications(Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute (MDPI), 2016-12-01); ;François, Grégory; This paper presents an overview of the recent developments of modifier-adaptation schemes for real-time optimization of uncertain processes. These schemes have the ability to reach plant optimality upon convergence despite the presence of structural plant-model mismatch. Modifier Adaptation has its origins in the technique of Integrated System Optimization and Parameter Estimation, but differs in the definition of the modifiers and in the fact that no parameter estimation is required. This paper reviews the fundamentals of Modifier Adaptation and provides an overview of several variants and extensions. Furthermore, the paper discusses different methods for estimating the required gradients (or modifiers) from noisy measurements. We also give an overview of the application studies available in the literature. Finally, the paper briefly discusses open issues so as to promote future research in this area.Publicationtype: Review Article4 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Access status: without files , Real-Time optimization based on adaptation of surrogate modelsRecently, different real-time optimization (RTO) schemes that guarantee feasibility of all RTO iterates and monotonic convergence to the optimal plant operating point have been proposed. However, simulations reveal that these schemes converge very slowly to the plant optimum, which may be prohibitive in applications. This note proposes an RTO scheme based on second-order surrogate models of the objective and the constraints, which enforces feasibility of all RTO iterates, i.e., plant constraints are satisfied at all iterations. In order to speed up convergence, we suggest an online adaptation strategy of the surrogate models that is based on trust-region ideas. The efficacy of the proposed RTO scheme is demonstrated in simulations via both a numerical example and the steady-state optimization of the Williams-Otto reactor.Publicationtype: Conference Paper8 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Access status: without files , Time-optimal path-following operation in the presence of uncertaintyPath-following tasks, which refer to dynamic motion planning along pre-specified geometric references, are frequently encountered in applications such as milling, robot-supported measurements, and trajectory planning for autonomous vehicles. Different convex and non-convex optimal control formulations have been proposed to tackle these problems for the case of perfect models. This paper analyzes path-following problems in the presence of plant-model mismatch. The proposed adaptation strategies rely on concepts that are well known in the field of real-time optimization. We present conditions guaranteeing that, upon convergence, a minimumtime solution is attained despite the presence of plant-model mismatch. We draw upon a simulated robotic example to illustrate our results.Publicationtype: Conference Paper6 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
