    Zielgerichtete Gestaltung modularer Maschinen-Architekturen: Ermöglichen digitaler Fabriken durch die Entwicklung digitalfähiger Systeme
    A digital factory is a good approach for optimizing value streams. Various aspects contribute to the design of digital factories - on the process side and on the product/system side. This ranges from machining centers to autonomous transport systems. Each of these products/systems must have a corresponding architecture that facilitates integration. Therefore, the system architecture design should not be neglected and is an essential part of the development process. With the methodical development of modular architectures, products/ systems are supported in their integration into digital factories. This article shows how the Integrated PKT-Approach for Developing Modular Product Families enables this.

    Analyzing Dependencies between Product Architecture and Module Drivers
    A company's business model focuses on delivering personalized products or changing its offering to a Product-Service System impacts the underlying product architecture. Depending on the aim, different product architectures need to be designed. Therefore, modularization utilizing module drivers offers the advantage that additional objectives can be addressed. This contribution identifies module drivers focusing on the architecture design of personalization, collaboration, or PSS, which are not yet known. Analyzing existing literature and empirical findings, dependencies between different module drivers and product architectures are identified. As a result of this contribution, an extended view of module drivers in various product architecture applications is given.

    Life phases modularisation of product-service systems
    (Cambridge University Press (CUP), 2021-07-27) ;
    Product Service Systems (PSS) are increasingly important for companies. They enable a multitude of advantages, including the ability to offer customers even more individual customised solutions. However, PSS can also cause negative effects for companies. For example, PSS increase the complexity within companies. In order to cope with this complexity, the modularisation of PSS is frequently suggested in literature. However, existing approaches for modularisation only consider functional reasons for module composition and neglect the product-strategic aspects. This paper introduces a new approach for the modularisation of PSS, which combines functional and product-strategic aspects into one approach. To achieve this, a separate modular structure is developed for each life phase. Following this, these are harmonised across all life phases. This enables the advantages of the modular PSS structure to be used in all life phases. A PSS family of laser processing machines is used to illustrate the new developed approach.

    Harmonizing cross-departmental perspectives on modular product families
    (Elsevier, 2020-08-18) ; ;
    In order to maintain their competitiveness and to respond effectively to different customer needs, manufacturing companies offer a wide range of product variants. This increasing product variety leads to an increase in variety-induced complexity and thus to rising costs in all departments. The development of modular product families is a proven strategy to handle the large external variety with a relatively small internal variety. Modularization requires not only technical-functional, but also organizational, process-related and strategic aspects from all involved departments in order to create an optimal product architecture. The method of the Life Phases Modularization offers this possibility as it integrates all perspectives of the different departments and tries to harmonize the partially contradictory aspects using the Module Process Chart (MPC). The resulting harmonized module process forms the global optimum for exploiting potentials of modular product families within the entire company. The method was developed almost a decade ago and has been applied and refined over time in several industrial cases. This paper presents the method on the basis of two industrial examples and shows deficits and improvements in a consolidated manner.

    The impact of modular product architectures in PSS design: a systematic literature review
    (Elsevier, 2019-09-04) ; ;
    Changes in customer requirements have led companies to offer not only pure products, but increasingly holistic solutions. These holistic solutions consist of products and services and are called product-service systems (PSS). One possibility to develop PSS is the usage of modular product architectures, as this is an established approach in product design. The aim of this work is to verify the importance of modular product architectures for the development of PSS. For this purpose, the established topics in the field of PSS design will be analyzed with the help of a co-citation analysis and then existing methods for the design of PSS will be evaluated. Finally, the findings are summarized and an outlook on further research topics is given.
