Experimental learning is indispensable for the understanding of (natural) scientific concepts. In order to counteract the didactic, methodological and structural challenges of experimentation in everyday school life, a concept for experiments from the “Experimentierkiste” is presented. Thematically, biotechnological approaches with relevance to everyday life are focused on for inquiry-based STEM teaching. The growth and conditions of microorganisms are examined in detail and demonstrated in experiments with yeast and microalgae. The relevance of this topic is based on the socially relevant scientific significance of microbial processes, especially in the medical and biotechnological fields. The core concept of the experimental kit is an essential component for the implementation of such inquiry-based topics with experiments in science lessons. On the topic of yeast, there is a free hands-on experiment website www.kniffelix.de for individuals and school classes from 3rd–13th grade which enhances the learning experience.
