Reverse osmosis membranes based on cellulose acetate as well as aromatic polyamide were modified to be electrically conductive by utilising carbon nanotubes. By applying a positive electrical potential onto the membrane surface the amount of attached bacteria Staphylococcus warneri was reduced by about 50 %. Electrostatic forces were identified as the cause for the anti-fouling effect.
